According to Psychology Today, Parental Alienation occurs “when one parent attempts to turn the couple’s children against the other parent”. So, why would a parent do this? Isn’t this abusive toward the children?
First, as to the issue of abuse, YES this is abuse. The parent who plays this game is abusing the child. Why would a parent do this? To gain leverage in a divorce and/or custody dispute, without caring about the health and safety of their own child. Clearly, within this “game”, the parent who is engaging in this behavior simply would rather “win” over caring for the children. Frankly, this behavior is toxic. This is an attempt to poison the children against a parent that they love.
This behavior cannot be ignored, and a good attorney needs to be involved to direct the client who is being alienated through the legal process to not only halt this behavior from continuing, but to consider demanding SOLE CUSTODY due to this narcissistic and damaging behavior.
